Sunday Culture
I executed a stunning Irish goodbye after a fancy conference dinner this week. Reader, it was glorious. An Irish goodbye, if you are unfamiliar, is functionally identical to a ‘French Exit’- that is, leaving a gathering without saying goodbye or telling anyone. One can then bathe in a smugness that accompanies an early (ish) night tucked up in bed.
What I’ve been watching
The Pitt season 2 finished in the US this week. I’ve been watching it, it is still a realistic depiction of working in healthcare but the storytelling has irked me this time around. A bit too much ‘tell’ and not enough ‘show’. Trust the viewers to work it out without clunkily hitting them over the head with dialogue about staff getting abuse or wild birthing stats. Maybe the first season benefitted from a full binge, I’ve been going week by week for number two. A change in pace for sure.
What I’ve been reading
One highlight of the conference I was at was the investiture of the President of the host society. In it, we usually discover really quite fascinating things about colleagues and their family history that often have nothing to do with the job we do. So, after finding out about a 2015 1000m mountain challenge organised by the incumbent to raise money for the Archie Foundation, I bought the accompanying account (which comes with a map!). All proceeds go to the charity which supports children’s healthcare in Scotland. I’m preparing myself to feel a bit lazy and inadequate in the face of such adventure!

What I’ve been listening to
At time of writing, we are 33 days out from the release of a new Boards of Canada album which had prompted me to delve in to their mostly ambient back catalogue. ‘Dayvan Cowboy’ is probably their best known tune but they have so much more. They also teased this comeback in a variety of quirky ways, from mailing VHS tapes to unsuspecting fans to sending cryptic YouTube links to local news outlets. In a world of immediately available information where it can feel like we are being embalmed in advertising and marketing, this is to be applauded in my book.
Pals on A+E After Dark Watch
One tiny cameo with a line of dialogue featuring one of the two of them. Come on, channel 5.
And now onwards in to the month of May we go.
