The leaves have turned. October 2026.

We are fully in to Keat’s season of mists and mellow fruitfulness. There was a bit of Transitional Jacket but more days of needing a Big Coat (and the gloves will soon need to be cracked). I’m all for it and fully understand why Keats wrote his ode to this most beautifully honed colour chart array of a season.

What I’ve been watching

In a remarkable display of no self control, I have binged every single episode of season 4 of Blue Lights. It was released on a Tuesday. There I was, expecting a weekly release and all six episodes were dropped in my lap. Had them watched by the Thursday. Yet again the show manages to weave very pertinent community stories (this time around anti immigration riots kick the action off) with the layered poison of drugs and the legacy of trauma. It can be a tough watch at times, particularly when some elements could be following the news in real life.

Interestingly, two different pals independently said the first episode was reminiscent of Casualty in how it was shot. Lead director was season 4 was Angela Griffin, OG Holby City cast member. May not be relevant but an interesting connection.

And yes, I’m am fully stuck in to Celebrity Traitors. The mindless appointment TV we need in these times.

What I’ve been reading

A schmaltzy TV show that just wrapped up its (probably not asked for) latest season had a character narrate a montage using the following poem. I’m not naming the show or the character in the interests of possible minor spoilers but the poem is a gorgeous reflection on wanting to live one full and precious life.

It is ‘When Death Comes’ by American poet Mary J Oliver.

What I’ve been listening to

Honestly, some of the tunes from old series of ‘Horrible Histories’. A pal’s daughter has tasked me with learning the entirety of the Monarch’s song (which goes through the list of every king and queen of England) so if over the next few months you are wondering what I’m doing to unwind, it’s this.

I can only remember the ‘HEY’ bit so far, I might be cooked as the kids say.

(It’s not even ‘HEY’, it’s ‘OI’. help).

May your week ahead bring you the red leaves and less of the sad ones with the black spots on them.
