This week’s Sunday Culture is all about the children and charity. At the time of this hitting your inboxes, there should have been a crowd gathering to run a charity 5k for those with blood cancer in Northern Ireland but, alas, Storm Boelo has seen it off. Leukaemia is
We are fully in to Keat’s season of mists and mellow fruitfulness. There was a bit of Transitional Jacket but more days of needing a Big Coat (and the gloves will soon need to be cracked). I’m all for it and fully understand why Keats wrote his ode
'ER', the 1994 medical show written by Michael Crichton, has popped up on my socials recently. It might be because of its link to the recent smash hit 'The Pitt' but more likely due to the recent release of a book charting the oral history of
Sunday Culture on a Monday….it’s time for some autumnal whimsy. My favourite season has arrived (premium TV, kidding, I mean autumn). The jackets are steadily being replaced with coats and wet leaves will undoubtedly be slipped upon. What I‘ve been watching Sharon Horgan has done it again-
This week has seen a maelstrom develop around a certain tour in America, some truly terrible PR statements and the question of keeping politics out of art. Art is political. Being able to claim an apolitical stance is a privilege. And increasingly for people, bland and 'both sides'
I am in a flare of my chronic health condition at the moment but taking some solace in writing and soaking up bits of culture where I can. My health and trying to constantly manage it has been a bit like the Fringe- relentless pressure to 'go go go&
The Fringe is Fringeing. Half of the main street running through the city is still closed several weeks after a fire in a listed building. People dander about like it is their first day on Earth. And there’s an argument to be made that the Edinburgh festival (and all
I have quite sparse memories of the day of my 18th birthday. Partly as it was 23 years ago, partly as there was a fair amount of booze involved. But it was a Bank Holiday and the vague plan was pub with the usual heads for a legal bottle of
Different parts of Edinburgh have been on fire over the last couple of weeks, the immediate repercussions of which are causing mild travel upset in an already overcrowded town filled with residents and those flocking here to soak up the culture. And this is before the F word brings even
A week and a half ago, I had the most pure joyful fun I’ve had in a longtime, dancing in the rain in park in Glasgow wearing a bald cap with my mates as we bopped to Mr Worldwide (Pitbull, to any of you unfamiliar with his game). Supported
Today is Father’s Day in the UK. Late stage capitalism has us surrounded by reminders of this and it’s a tough one to avoid if you’re a) as online as I am and b) a member of dead dad club. The further I get in to this
As someone who spends a reasonable amount of time online, I was really heartened by the outpouring of love on the socials following the death of Anthony Stewart Head. An English actor you may or may not recognise from fantastic supporting roles in Ted Lasso, Merlin, Bridgerton, coffee ads…Or
Life has been busy in drdbunks land and this edition comes to you from Italy! a the pinnacle of culture for me is sipping a cold glass of vino in a piazza watching the world go by…. What I’ve been listening to White Lotus season 2 soundtrack. I’m
I executed a stunning Irish goodbye after a fancy conference dinner this week. Reader, it was glorious. An Irish goodbye, if you are unfamiliar, is functionally identical to a ‘French Exit’- that is, leaving a gathering without saying goodbye or telling anyone. One can then bathe in a smugness that
Looking backwards has been a bit of an accidental theme of the last week, prompted by immersing myself in old photos in the hunt for one in particular (reader, I couldn’t find it). The photo albums downloaded from a now deleted Facebook account in which our more carefree nights
In my day job, I am an anaesthetist. It’s a tricky word to say, to spell, and to understand what it it is. We’re a product of our own success, rendering you unconscious so that surgery isn’t an assault. But with mind altering drugs so that you
A very low energy week for me due to illness. Lowest point was my face not being recognisable to my smartphone as I resembled something approximating the facial reconstruction of Richard the Third. Comfort culture is the name of the game when illness visits. What I’ve been watching Abbott
My acupuncturist (yes, I am chic enough to have an acupuncturist and he's French) told me recently that I need to reconnect with my blueprint. I'm not exactly sure what that means but I've taken it as permission, nay a mandate to spend time
I’ve had a week of travelling to courses and conferences. As an introductory faculty icebreaker to delegates on day 1 of course 1, we were asked to share something we were grateful for. To me, it was the solo train time I had to finish a book. ‘What book’
I think I was about 17 years old when I was first captivated by the music of Jeff Buckley. The first time I heard anything by him was on my favourite TV show ‘The West Wing’, where his cover of ‘Hallelujah’ played over a particularly heartbreaking scene. I was hooked.
Tired me was at a work conference at the end of a week of annual leave. A choice I stupidly made for the greater good but which has entirely drained me (when I am already at a bit of an ebb). I bet no-one I spoke to bar my
I’m writing this from my childhood bedroom after one of the best sleeps I’ve had in a while. Sometimes all you need is family and a rainy walk on a rugged beach to fill your cup up. Not much culture has been consumed this week as I’ve
Writing has taken a back seat the last couple of weeks as life has gotten in the way and I’ve prioritised showing up for the necessary. So I’ve blinked and somehow it is already mid February. Despite the promise that comes with brighter mornings, it feels like it
After a fallow week, I’ve outdone myself to make up for being quiet. For it is the 25th anniversary of the release of Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring and to celebrate, the extended edition is being shown in selected cinemas. The extended editions are the only
